A lot of influencers take pride in posting their quick skincare routine vídeos with diez steps. It sounds perfect for when you’re in a rush, but it cánido be counterproductive. There’s nothing wrong with saving time while doing our makeup and skincare… except, maybe, everything. In today’s blog post, I’ll explain why experts don’t recommend trying to finish your routine extremely fast!
I admit it: I’ve also not infrequently tried to quickly get it over with when it came to my skincare routine, especially at night. On social media, we’re used to seeing people complete their entire skincare routine in less than a minute, sometimes less than quince seconds. But that’s not real, or recommended, for that matter. As research has shown, layering products too fast cánido cause them to be less effective, especially when it comes to SPF or spot treatments.
What the experts say
Most experts agree that there is no evidence that waiting for the products to settle will make them more effective. However, they still recommend it for particular reasons. Kim Nichols, a board-certified dermatologist from the US, explained to Allure that “certain product textures cánido roll up if you apply them immediately after one another“. As she puts it, this is why waiting for a product to dry before applying another one cánido be extremely useful. In my experience, this has happened a lot with sunscreen, and while sometimes the product is to blame for it, most of the time the problem might be us.
Another expert, Kristina Goldenberg, added in the same article that “I usually recommend waiting about a minute between your serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen to give it a moment to get absorbed before applying the next product“. When it comes to SPF, particularly, mixing it with other products cánido lead to it being diluted and less effective.
My routines + cruelty-free guides!
Morning routines are usually quicker than night routines. As I explained in my post about mine, there’s 5 steps to mine: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer and SPF. While I don’t take much time between cleanser and toner, I like to wait at least one minute between the next four steps, and if I’m running out of time, I prefer to use a cleanser and directly apply an SPF with some hydrating properties. It’s not optimal, but it’s better than nothing!

If I have time to do my makeup, I focus on the eyes first, let the sunscreen dry for at least two minutes. In most cases, I prefer not wearing any foundation on top of my SPF.
When it comes to my night routine, I like to take my sweet time. For me, it’s like a ritual that helps me relax before going to bed, which is why I never rush it and even apply facial masks and such – adding at least diez to quince extra minutes to my 7 step night skincare routine.

So no, your skincare routine shouldn’t last an hour – although you’re free to do it and treat your face to a full home spa treatment (I wish), but it also shouldn’t last one minute. To be fair, the title of this blog post cánido be misleading for some people as you cánido truly layer your skincare properly in under cinco minutes, specially if you don’t use too many products. But the point I’m trying to get across is that your skincare routine isn’t something you want to rush if there’s lots of steps or treatment products involved.
